This might soon change as Garcinia Cambogia slowly but surely takes over the diet and weight loss industry. This all natural supplement is actually originating from a fruit of yellow color and pumpkin shape, with the size of about an orange when fully matured. Although no one really paid any attention to it, a group of scientists in the late 60s found out that the rind of the fruit contains a very important element, the so called hydroxycitric acid. This chemical substance, also known as HCA, may have various benefits and effects on the lipid metabolism of humans, resulting in a possible use within the Health and food supplement industry.

But what exactly is HCA, how does it work? We are about to get a bit of "science-y" here, but try to keep up if you can, since this might change how you view Garcinia Cambogia.
One isomer of Hydroxycitric acid inhibits the two enzymes in the body (alpha-amylase and alpha-glucosidase) which are responsible for carbohydrate metabolism. In layman's terms this means that the fruit contains an element that stops the body from converting carbohydrates to fat. Awesome, right?
That is what Dr. Oz thought too when he first encountered it. Soon after the debut on his show the demand for this product blew up as it seems to have effects which are highly sought after: A reduced appetite, a reduction in fat creation within the human body and some people even suggest that it enhances and elevates their mood! You can not take such claims at face value of course as it is important to evaluate all the pros and cons before deciding to buy into a new weight-loss fad.
Are there any studies that back up the effectiveness of HCA or Garcinia Cambogia?
There are some very controversial answers to this question. Zucker rats, a type of mammal which is genetically predisposed to store large amounts of fat relative to their size, were used in a study to see whether the hydroxycitric acid has any effect on them. The study showed that although the fat accumulation was drastically reduced, many showed signs of increased testicular toxicity. Not good. It is important to note however, that there are claims that the HCA supplemented in the experiment was of sub-par quality or even contaminated with other substances that led to this somewhat disappointing result.

When Dr. Oz finally lifted the veil and commented on the effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia he did not recommend any particular brand, what he did however was to advise to search for sources where the HCA content of the diet supplement is at least 50%. This is important in order to ensure that there is any effect at all. He also recommended to prefer natural or organic products, with no additives as it may influence the results in an unknown way. Better be safe than sorry.
Overall the studies on HCA and Garcinia Cambogia are inconclusive. Additional tests and studies are required to warrant claims about the increase in fat metabolism and exercise performance, but there are very promising signs when it comes to actual weight loss. In case you are currently considering the purchase of this diet supplement then make sure you heed Dr. Oz's advice: HCA content of 50% minimum and only 100% natural products. You should expect to see a decrease in your appetite, positive changes to your mood, weight loss without any change to your eating habits or the feeling of hunger and maybe even increased energy when it comes to exercise. This fruit has been consumed for generations now in the region where it grows for various benefits, so you might see some of them even though unexpected.
The results should be seen, all you have to do is make sure to purchase only the highest quality diet supplements, exercise regularly, and eat as healthy as possible without sacrificing too much of your personal needs and wants.
